Characters counts every visible character (Chinese characters, letters, digits, punctuation). The no-spaces version strips spaces, newlines and tabs. Chinese characters counts only Chinese characters, excluding letters, digits and punctuation.
A continuous run of letters and digits delimited by whitespace or punctuation counts as one word. For example, Hello World counts as 2 words, and a hyphenated word like well-known counts as 1.
